A river cruise with Uniworld isn’t just travel—it’s an experience in effortless elegance and warmth. The moment I stepped aboard the SS Maria Theresa, I knew I was in for something special.
The interiors were stunning. They offered just the right touch of grandeur. The baroque details mixed beautifully with soft, welcoming touches. A sparkling chandelier lit the grand staircase, casting a golden glow on the portrait of Maria Theresa. The crew greeted me with a warm smiles and handed me a glass of champagne. Call it the mothership moment—but something about that welcome made me feel instantly and completely at home.
Uniworld’s SS Maria Theresa doesn’t shout luxury—it whispers it with grace. Polished details, attentive yet unobtrusive service, and thoughtful touches create an experience that feels elegant, yet completely inviting.
A regal welcome aboard: Standing beneath the stunning portrait of Empress Maria Theresa, a signature moment in the ship’s grand lobby.
The SS Maria Theresa makes a grand first impression—but the little touches truly define the river cruise experience. One of my favorite luxuries? A French martini served in a gleaming Waterford crystal glass in the lounge. Each evening felt special, with plated desserts on fine china that made every course feel like a celebration.
Back in my stateroom, the little touches continued to delight—valet kits, heated marble floors, and European chocolates. Even the ship’s public areas had surprises—jars of candy near the lounge and cookies by the espresso machine.
The setting was elegant and the food was delicious, but what I’ll remember most is the incredible crew. I was blown away by the spectacular onboard service. Every crew member I encountered carried themselves with warmth and professionalism. My cabin steward Paula would greet me every morning with a warm smile and “Hello Miss Michele!”. The dining team was efficient, witty, and knowledgeable. The onboard team elevated each moment into something memorable.
My home for this river cruise was a Deluxe French Balcony stateroom. With handcrafted design and peaceful river views, the space offered a perfect mix of comfort and elegance. You can take a closer look at this category in my YouTube video walkthrough.
As a travel advisor, I had the chance to explore every stateroom on the SS Maria Theresa. From the cozy Classic cabins to the stunning Grand Suite, each space felt distinct and thoughtfully designed. What stood out most? Every room had its own personality—no two were exactly alike. True to Uniworld’s boutique style, it felt more like touring a European hotel than a typical river cruise ship.
The Deluxe French Balcony stateroom was a haven of comfort and charm.
Dining aboard this river cruise was a highlight from start to finish. Each dish is made from scratch with care. From flaky morning pastries to inventive daily soups and ice creams, the culinary team delivered something memorable at every meal.
Lunches included a fresh salad bar with rotating dressings—two of them Uniworld favorites. Bea Tollman’s comforting chicken soup and her signature salad dressing were offered daily, honoring the heart of the brand.
Each evening began with our sommelier introducing the dinner wines, often paired with a witty story or thoughtful quote. This charming ritual quickly became a highlight—personal, lighthearted, and uniquely Uniworld.
Dinner followed with chef-curated menus and à la carte options featuring regional and international specialties. A few of my favorites? White wine soup, perfectly cooked duck, and Austrian Käsekrainer sausage with spätzle.
Legacy of Hospitality: A Tribute to Bea Tollman
Bea Tollman, matriarch of the Uniworld family, left an indelible mark on every ship in the fleet. Her comforting recipes—like her signature chicken soup—are lovingly served daily aboard as a tribute to her legacy of warmth, care, and hospitality.
One of many show-stopping desserts on board—this perfectly torched Baked Alaska was as delightful as the evening entertainment that followed.
Every day brought a new destination and a new adventure! In Vienna, I had the rare opportunity to visit the famed Lipizzaner stallions behind the scenes. One evening, we enjoyed private, after-hours access to Schönbrunn Palace. It felt like stepping into a fairytale.
I joined a Make Travel Matter walking tour in Bratislava that explored the country’s communist history. Led by a local guide with personal insight, it was a meaningful way to engage with the region’s complex past.
What stood out most was how seamless each experience felt. No stress, no long waits—just a gentle, guided flow between ship and shore. This level of care reflects my Seamless Sail Philosophy™: travel should feel effortless and immersive, not rushed or rigid.
As a travel advisor, I work closely with clients to help match their river cruise excursions to their passions—be it art, history, architecture, or cuisine—ensuring each day on land feels just as personalized as your time on board.
Exploring Bratislava’s layered history on a Make Travel Matter tour. This included a visit outside the National Museum of Slovakia.
I was pleasantly surprised by how relaxing life onboard this Uniworld river cruise truly felt. The SS Maria Theresa pairs elegance with comfort in the most natural way. The lounge quickly became a favorite gathering place. Mornings brought river views and cappuccinos; evenings offered cocktails and lively conversation and laughter. Downstairs, a cozy movie theater showed daily films—complete with popcorn and candy. The spa offered massages and facials for guests seeking a little extra indulgence..
What stood out most? The ship balanced elegant surroundings with a relaxed and genuinely easygoing vibe. One night, our cruise manager hosted a silent disco—and to my surprise, nearly everyone joined in. Guests of all ages danced for hours, laughing, singing, and sharing a kind of joy that filled the whole ship.
This wasn’t a cruise where luxury felt staged. It was relaxed, thoughtful, and entirely authentic.
Luxury and laughter go hand in hand! My colleague and I joined the silent disco fun, proving river cruising can be both elegant and full of energy.

One of my favorite moments was sailing through Austria’s stunning Wachau Valley. With a riesling in hand, the beauty of the Danube unfolded around me.
